On 11 June, the Bernima team spent the day at Legal Geek Growth in London — the UK's largest event built specifically for small and mid-sized law firms working out how to modernise with confidence. Held at Woolwich Works in the Royal Arsenal and run in association with The Law Society, the event drew roughly 2,000 attendees from more than 600 firms across three stages, two workshop rooms, and a full day of roundtables and demos.
What stood out wasn't the scale. It was the quality of the questions — and how directly they map onto the problem Bernima is built to solve.
The conversation has moved past the hype
For the past two years, much of the legal-AI discussion has lived at the level of abstraction: will AI change the profession, should firms adopt it, what might happen to billable hours. At Legal Geek Growth, that framing was largely absent. The panels were sharp, the discussions honest, and the room had clearly moved on to the operational questions.
Speakers and attendees were talking about workflow automation that survives contact with a real matter. About the economics of AI when work that used to take a day takes an afternoon — and what that does to billing, staffing, and margins. About right-sizing tools to a firm's actual caseload and budget rather than buying the largest platform on offer. And, running underneath nearly every session: trust, confidentiality, and adoption.
Those three words define the gap between a legal AI demo and a legal AI deployment. It is one thing to show that a tool can draft, summarise, or search. It is another to give a firm the confidence that sensitive client data stays protected, that the workflow is defensible, and that the people who do the work will actually use it. That gap — not raw model quality — is where most legal AI stalls.
Adoption is a control problem before it is a capability problem
One of the more useful threads at the event was the human side of change inside law firms: bridging generational gaps, building digital confidence, and bringing reluctant adopters along rather than leaving them behind. The practical advice centred on training, communication, and framing technology as an enabler rather than a threat.
This matters because the failure mode for legal technology is rarely the model. It is the rollout. A capable tool that the team doesn't trust — or can't rely on under deadline pressure — quietly goes unused. Confidentiality, in particular, is not a compliance checkbox cleared once; it is a daily precondition for adoption. Lawyers adopt what they trust, and they trust what they can see is secure.
That is the thesis Bernima is built around: security and trust are not features added to a legal AI workflow after the fact. They are the precondition for the workflow being used at all — and therefore the precondition for the commercial outcome.
Cybersecurity belongs in the same sentence as adoption
It was notable how often cybersecurity came up not as a separate "IT" topic but as part of the same conversation as automation and adoption. For smaller and independent firms — the audience Legal Geek Growth is designed for — the security burden has historically been a barrier to adopting modern tools at all. The firms that move fastest are the ones that can answer the confidentiality question cleanly, without slowing the lawyers down.
That intersection — serious security requirements meeting a real need for usable, AI-native workflows — is the category Bernima is building for: secure infrastructure that lets firms put AI to work on privileged matters without giving up control of their data.
Where the real thinking happens
As usual at events like this, some of the most valuable exchanges happened away from the stages — over coffee, in the corridor, at the edge of a panel room. Those conversations are where assumptions get tested and where the people building seriously in this space compare notes on what is actually working.
We left with new connections we're excited about and a few threads worth pulling. More than anything, we left with confirmation of the demand signal: the firms taking this space seriously are no longer asking whether to adopt AI, but how to adopt it in a way that earns and keeps the trust of clients and colleagues.
That is the question Bernima exists to answer.
